New Technical Paper

Published in July 1, 2016

GEOLOG and Kuwait Oil Company jointly presented the paper “The Application of Well Site Isotopic Analysis for Reservoir Evaluation” (#1533) at the SPWLA Symposium (June 2016). This paper documents for the very first time in the oil industry the successful measurement and utilization of carbon isotopic data from C1, C2 and C3 while drilling in real time, to characterize an oil reservoir.
The scope was to characterize the reservoir fluids and the source rock fluids in terms of maturity, and identify any vertical or horizontal variations across the basin. The successful evaluation of the reservoir was based on a novel technology which permitted extending the range of carbon isotopic analysis beyond methane, to light hydrocarbons such as ethane and propane. This technology advancement has broadened the analysis done while-drilling and generated an isotopic data density much superior to what can be obtained in the laboratory.
